Boccia on Wheels

One of the winners of the spring wave of "CityGrants" Program was the team of the project "Boccia on Wheels". Theme — hot sport.

Boccia is sports ball game for accuracy. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that people with different physical abilities can be involved in it simultaneously, and it is possible to train both indoors and outdoors. All you need is a solid, level surface, balls, and desire.

Thanks to the implemented project in Ivano-Frankivsk, the team "Strong in Spirit" (in Ukrainian "Sylʹni dukhom") was created because of the game boccia. It made possible for people with disabilities to train actively and participate in competitions of various levels.

Today, the team has 12 permanent participants, 6 of them are in the regional team. For four months, since the implementation of the project "Strong in Spirit", they took part in three championships in the game of boccia: the regional selective championship of Ivano-Frankivsk region, the regional Lviv championship, and also in the boccia championship of Ukraine, which was held in Odessa. In general, the team won six games, including 1 and 2 prize places in the Ukrainian Championship in the classification of BC5 (open class).

Also, in parallel with the sporting activities, the initiators of the project are actively working on two projects for boccia playgrounds in Ivano-Frankivsk.

Details about the initiative are on the project page on Facebook.

Project Coordinator Mykola Makar about the idea and perspectives of the project:

"Some time ago we participated in sports and recreational games that were organized by the Malta assistance service in Ivano-Frankivsk. Among them was boccia. Then we did not have the inventory, we knew very little about the game itself, but we had a sporting passion and an emotional ardor.

Later we learned that Boccia is the only Paralympic sport that people with high lesion or spine disease can deal with, and there are so many in our region. So we had the idea to create a boccia sports team.

Today, I think we have a real chance to develop this sport for people with disabilities in the region and in the city. After all, in addition to "City Grants", we also feel the support of interested businesses and the administration to construct a special hard-surface field for playing boccia".

In September 2015, Teple Misto Platform founded the City Grants program to activate and strengthen initiatives, NGOs and communities, which are aimed at progressive development of the city, at implementing projects that improve quality of urban living and attracting community to take active part in the development of Ivano-Frankivsk.
